In 1971 a group of prominent business and civic leaders organized the Willow Grove Golf Open to raise money for the support of the Second Alarmers Rescue Squad. As the event grew through the years, it was expanded to be called the Greater Willow grove Golf Open and more charitable efforts were included. Ongoing needs prompted teh board of directors to form Willow Grove Charities through twhich contributions could be quickly granted. Although the Greater Willow Grove Golf Open is the main funding mechanism of Willow Grove Charities, other individuals, businesses, and organizations have used this group to funnel support to the less fortunate in the communities of Willow Grove, Abington, Hatboro and Horsham. 100% of the charitable contributions are given out in grants. In 2009, The Greater Willow Grove Charities committed to purchasing $12,000 worth of critical lifesaving equipment for Second Alarmers over the next three years. The GWGGO Committee chose to support Second Alarmers by funding the purchase of EZ-IO Bone Guns and accesories for each of the 12 Paramedic Units that serve the Greater Willow Grove Area. The small hand-held guns are starting to be placed in service and most of our practitioners already don't know how they ever got along without them. The tool is used as a back-up means of establishing an IV line in patients that are too difficult to reach a vein in the traditional manner such as when the patient is dehydrated, diabetic or under extreme trauma. The bone drill can be used to quickly insert an intraosseous needle directly into the bone to dispense fluids, medications or sugar.
