Gameplay from TOCA Race Driver 3 by Codemasters, playing on the Sony Playstation 2 (PS2).

My thanks go to PSI236, who sent this game to me.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's more a case of me speaking my thoughts while playing the games, many for the first time, and most for the first time in a very long time... so it's all a little spontaneous and random.
Predictably, as I never practice before recording, I usually play very badly.

Given that I am playing many of these games for the first time, and everything I say is completely off the cuff, you probably shouldn't take what I say overly seriously. The opinions that I express are my feelings at the time, but it's entirely possible that they would be different if I were to take the time to get to grips with the game.

However, given that these videos are intended to show that "first time experience", I believe they have some validity or merit.

  • I've never played this, but I DO love Codemaster's racing games! I have an Arcade XBOX 360, but plan on picking up a used PS2 at some point. It's just got too many games to pass up on!

  • @dave4shmups Yup... masses of great games for it. I still buy way more PS2 than PS3 games... though mainly coz you can pick them up for just a couple of pounds in Game Station or wherever :)

  • It's nice how they have real tracks in this, Donnington, Brands Hatch, etc. Gives a feeling of realism, watching you play really jogged my memory, I havn't played this for like 5 years.

  • @PSI236 Real tracks are definitely the way to go. Admittedly the odd fantasy circuit can be quite stunning, but they don't give you the opportunity to chase a lap record that was set in the real world.

I still can't get close to the Nurburgring lap record, regardless of what I drive, or in what game.

  • @dave4shmups

    I also have X360!

But 3 months ago I bought used PS2 :) It's great platform, there are lots of games which U can play on splitscreen! What is more, not graphics is most important in PS2 games, but gameplay! Lots of great productions and exclusives... Never mind it is an older generations - It's just a great fun. I'm reccomending it to you :)

  • I suppose the series wasnt making aenough money to justify the time and money to obtain the licenses for DTM & V8 Supercars for example.

Weird that only the first one actually had the UK ToCA touring license.

  • I was so gutted when Codemasters dropped this series to make a while very good but terribly generic racer. Also the addition of drift racing made me very mad.Take away the one unique thing about race driver (the real world racing series) and substitute it for generic american muscle and japanese drifiting, seriously what the hell!

  • i loved these games but for me the games got worst as they went along , it seems each series had less stuff , mainly tracks , the first one has a buttload of real awesome touring car circuits but they became fewer and far between. I liked the story as well in one , while unrealistic it made progression more interesting.

  • @SteveBenway I did notice that comment, "reminds me of the corkscrew"! But we'll let you off... :)

  • @PSI236 God bless Donington :)

  • This game looks cool, I think I've gotten lazy playing Forza 3 and seeing the brake lines and having the ability to rewind.

  • The Graphics are good, its like Gran Turismo Graphics

  • I love TOCA games, I have Race Driver: GRID for windows which I believe is the sequel to this.

  • Nice Vid Steve, looks great. I would have to say that Motor Storm on the PS3 is one of my fave racing games. Burnout 3 is another.
