  • Gertebert, you are right my friend. 'marenqo' is an asshole, does nothing here, makes nothing, just picks on people. Who the fuck does he think he is ?!

  • I don't understand Flemish or French. I've read translations and usually, it's great to know the words he's singing because he was a magnificent lyracist. But even before I knew them, I listened. His voice was so rich and emotional. I could even imagine lyrics with a hint of a word here and there, and come up with a story. Sometimes the songs were better that way.

  • dit lied gaat toch over de lage landen,de lage landen bij de zee..Vlaanderen en de Hollandse provincien zo voelt het

  • Brel pays tribute to Flanders in such a way that it surpasses the barriers of a nation but it still is about Flanders...

I guess that's the essence of great art , it communicates on several levels and therefore surpasses the title of national art and becomes universal art ... i am so proud to see that a Belgian was able to use his mixture of identity of flemish and walloon in such a constructive way that he attained a universal level. I hope Belgium will produce many more Brels ;)

  • @Dropje.

who do I pick on? I never picked at anyone, the only thing I argued and keep on insisting is that Brel's music is placeless and timeless.

I find it funny what you are doing; claiming to be idealistic and concurrently trying to imprison Brel within the nationalistic contours of a Flemish setting. Calling people "assholes" because they have a different opinion is discriminatory. I do not like two-faced people, especially not when they share so much hate towards intellectual diversity.

  • I think it is about images, just like his "Amsterdam" is a song about an image, rather than a place. Brel sings about placeless, timeless situations and residues.

  • Nope, not true. Brel sings in this song about Flanders. And he sings about the Schelde. Nothing more, nothing less. His father was born in Zandvoorde and young Jacques spent many of his holidays there.

He always had a love-hate relationship with Flanders.

  • no imagination you have, it seems. He sings about the beauty of the flat land, which is universally applicable to the regions earlier mentioned. I am sorry, I do not like reductionists or monopolists.

  • Nope, not true. He sings about the Schelde and Flanders.

  • les plat pays... from Bretagne to Friesland and everything in between, beautiful
