Story:
SALA USA is an American re-creation of a Chinese folk song called
"Sala." This song is sung around the fire by the Qiang minority group
in Western China to celebrate life. I learned this song 3 years ago
while producing an album for children survivors of the 2008 Sichuan
Earthquake called Afterquake (w/ Dave Liang of the electronic group
Shanghai Restoration Project). The idea for Afterquake stemmed from an
experience I had playing for students at earthquake disaster
relocation schools around China in late 2008. After I would perform,
all of the students wanted to teach me their songs and tell me their
stories of loss and hope. Our connection through music was moving and
healing. I couldn't stop thinking about the kids and wondering if
there was a way I could help more. SALA USA is an offering, this side
of the Pacific, to celebrate life as it is here and now as well as
compassion for one another and our global home.

The proceeds from the song will go towards the China branch of the
Jane Goodall Institute's Roots & Shoots program, which is doing great
work in the region the Qiang minority calls home. in the words of Jane
Goodall: "Only if we understand can we care; only if we care will we
help; only if we help shall all be saved"
