  • 1) Why bother with flux on the spoon just to anneal?

    2) Why go into the pickle to quench instead of just using water?

  • @KatieCottingham Both are measures just to reduce the likelihood of oxidation. We have found that you can get away without usuing the flux whatsoever (since you are not soldering,) but the pickle acid removes the oxidation that occurs while annealling spoons. If you simply quench it in water, or let air dry, there may be significant unwanted oxidation left on the spoon. TECHNICALLY, you can sand or brush that oxidation off, but it takes more time and effort to do so.

  • what was the foredom tool for?

  • @XxSmallFryxX The foredom is used to sand the end of the spoon ring, as well as apply the brush finish.

  • I have a few questions: 1- What is flux? 2- What do you mean pickle pot and pickle? 3- Is every single step necessary to follow or can i skip a few?

  • @HeavenKnight100 Pickle acid is a solution used to keep metal clean by removing oxidation. You can find it at most if not all jewelry supply stores. Visit Rio Grande's website for more info.

Jewlery flux (or silver solder flux) can be purchased at your local jewelry supply store. It is a chemical that when applied to metal, will help the metal from oxidizing- thus keeping the metal clean for soldering or future working. I hope this helps! You can Google search jewelry flux for further info.

  • @HeavenKnight100 a pickle pot is simply a crock pot, you can buy them anywhere. This way you can heat the pickle solution, thus speeding up the cleaning process. You can skip all the chemicals if you use stainless steal, as it will ruin your pickle solution anyhow. Just make sure to quench after annealing.

  • All you need are those tools! It should be easy to do since we all have them at home. Right?

  • @HeavenKnight100 Check the Rio grande website

  • @ElginPocketwatch Pickle acid is a solution used to keep metal clean by removing oxidation. You can find it at most if not all jewelry supply stores. Visit Rio Grande's website for more info. We get our silver spoons from antique auctions, thrift shops, etc.

  • @luvbug119 We use an acetylene tank because I like how clean the flame burns. You can find them at most propane/gas supply shops in your local area. I would recommend browsing a description of the full setup needed (torch tip + Regulator) from the Rio Grande Website.

  • Wonderful video! I would love to try this sometime.

1 question though if you don't mind me asking, do you suggest a specific kind of torch to use?

  • Tu as de très belles mains, merci de souffler tes secrets.

  • A few questions:

    1. what is the pickle solution made of?

    2. can I use a silver plated spoon? (where can I find silver spoons?)

    3. What is the liver of sulfur for, and could I use something else as a substitute?

  • Anybody else see the video and think "this should be easy! I just have to bend a spoon into shape!"

  • Can this method be used with a silver plated spoon?

  • Thank you for the video it was very helpfull. Does the pickel or the flux help the metel become more maluable? What is your suggestion for making the metal easier to bend with out leaving marks on the metal from the plyers?
