White trash won't be able to buy soda as often if it's more expensive. The gov. should regulate our diets, because who the fuck wants america to be the "fat" country, like we currently are.
The tax doesn't sound like a great idea at first, but Dr Gupta has a good point with regard to tax subsidies: If we don't want the government regulating our diets, then why are we ok with the government using our income tax money to pay huge agri-businesses that grow excess corn and convert it into an unhealth byproduct (HFCS)?
walkman29-how do you know you aren't having this conversation with a piece of "white trash" that weighs all of 127#s?

Same here, I weigh 138 pounds and drink at least a 6 pack of non-diet soda a day. This tax is so wrong just like the tobacco tax.

Using your logic, the government should make drugs like cocaine legal.

No tax will make people quit drinking pop or lose weight. It's not the government's job to regulate our diets - that's a personal responsibility.
Another thing-what about 7-up when you're sick? Are they going to punish them too?
