If we were to repeal the 17th amendment to the U.S. constitution we would restore the republic that the founders created. It is time to take back this nation from the drunk monkeys running it.

  • Alan Keyes made this a part of his plank and was questioned about it on IL TV when he ran for Senator against Barack H. Obama. His answer didn't play well....as a matter of fact, Keyes was his own worst enemy in that debate. I happened to be visiting relatives in Elgin, IL and got to watch it live. Wish we could repeal it. 1913 was a very bad year. Maybe we should review all the legislation passed that year such as the Federal Reserve Act.

  • The true federalist of the time (unfortunately named the anti-federalists) did not support the state legislature appointing senators, nor did they support the electoral college.

Direct election of REPRESENTATIVES is not direct democracy, stupid. Electing someone to elect your representatives is far nearer to authoritarianism than it is direct democracy.

Read a history book before you make another ill-informed rant, please.

  • @ImDavidGurney I've been reseacrhing this idea, which I admitt is new to me. Your comment has talked me out of it.

  • All the Jews in the Senate represent one state:The State of Israel..

  • When this Amendment was enacted, there were no Jews in the Senate. Now,they're breeding as if they were roaches. The Founding Fathers knew all about this people.

  • @calthopian oops, i meant your

  • So to get rid of corrupt politicians, you're idea is to have Senators elected in dirty back room deals that mark politics today? If the people don't know what Congress is doing it's their fault, they can look it up online, watch CSPAN, etc putting buffesr between an elected official and their constituency only serves to make politics even more corrupt.

Also, just because a founding father thought of an idea doesn't make it perfect, the Constitution wasn't perfect, that's why we have amendments.

  • @frashure The Senate was never intended to be a "representative" of the "people". It was the AMBASSADOR Legislative Representatives of the "States" to the Federal government, and had 2 purposes: balance power between federal and states, and balance power between large and small states. The House being of the People is why it held exclusively power over taxes, power of Impeachment, to elect President in electoral deadlock, and the Speaker next in line after Vice President.

  • The 17th Amendment needs to be repealed! We need representation of the state government in Congress. This is possibly the catalyst that weakened the state's power and allowed the federal government to grow to such an excessive size. Senators are considered the most elite club in the world. Their children don't go to public school and most have off-shore bank accounts. We have Senators who go to DC and amass a fortune--millions of dollars. That is WRONG and corrupt.

  • Whether they admit it or not, politicians of all parties work out of the Machiavelli playbook. The purpose of separation of powers and checks and balances is to have ambition cancel ambition. Repealing the 17th Amendment would put state and federal ambitions at loggerheads. What's more, I think that in those states with bicameral legislatures, the state Senators should be chosen by the county and city councils.
