There is probably no greater thrill than to witness one of the massive articulated or Mallet type steam locomotives whooshing by at speed with 100 or more cars, or blasting a column of smoke skyward along with one or two helpers on a long freight drag up a steep grade.

Now witness this exciting action across America in the 40's and early 50's in full color from photographers such as Robert Flack, Emery Gulash, Tom Strid, and Jerry Carson. With exciting Stereo sound and music, you will be thrilled as you view action on Union Pacific, DM&IR, and N&W.

As an added bonus we have included a few scenes of the last few runs of Norfolk & Western's 1218, and double headed action with Union Pacific's 8444...culminating in one the most spectacular steam giants DVDs ever released!

Approx. Running Time 57 Minutes
Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo

  • hi greenfrog, i have many of your videos but i was wondering if the classic videos have original sound?

  • Many of our classic videos from film do have sound which was recorded wild with the film, we then try to sync up as much as possible, the rest we have to try to fill in form our library of sound.

  • Ditto on some of the clips being too short. What is the name of the tune that opens this video?

  • Thank-you for your input.

This is just the opening of the actual video, this is why the clips are short. The music comes from a professional Sound library!

  • Running a 10,000ft - 10,000ton train nowadays seems pretty amazing, but I would give my left nut (and my wife) to do what these guys did so many years ago!!!

  • I have this video, a must see for any railfan!

  • i used to have this on VHS!

  • Love those articulateds/mallets.....

  • UP 1 is my fav

  • Big boy is the king of the trains green frog.

  • And then there were the Beyer-Garratts. Too bad we never got into them. Many advantages over the Mallet.

  • I prefer the N&W Class A and Y6b over many articulateds, but they were each perfect in their own right. Hell 1218, could pull a modern freight with ease, if she wasn't a gut box.

  • My favorite articulated is the mighty Y6B's.

  • @NCtrainlover Agree but also remember that they did this on the air alone, no dynamic brakes in those days!

  • @GreenFrogVideos i think its best and truthful to the railfans who buy your videos. to only use the sounds the trains u recorded for the video actuly produced and not sounds from a sound library.

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!
