He sees his reflection in it. Cats do this as well. If they see a reflection of themselves, thinking it's another cat, they will look around the object, and see what's behind it.

To whoever asked about what kind of fox this is: Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are extremely common throughout North America and Eurasia, including Japan. The red fox (JP: 狐 "kitsune") has been a native of Japan since before recorded history, and plays a significant role in Japanese folklore. The two most common Japanese subspecies are the Hokkaido fox (V. v. schrencki) and the Japanese red fox (V. v. japonica). Wikipedia is your friend. =)
WHERE was this occurrence?? In a ZOO?!?! (I know you're in Japan, but...) I'd KILL (figuratively) to get THAT CLOSE to a fox! *squee* *wants to reach out and HUG the foxes...*

@thegoldenfox707 - I lived in Hokkaido (the northern island) where there is lots of space for nature and whatnot. This however was a fenced in area probably the size of a few football fields that you could pay admission to, walk around in, and there were dozens of foxes just wandering around, trying to figure out if you had anything they could eat or steal. it was near a city called Kitami, and we went to two in the same area. But I dont think they would have let me hug them even if i wanted.
