I made my underquilt from a Wallmart sleeping bag. It has a center top zipper with velcro latch which I added a snap to for more strength. It also has side vents that run about 1/3rd of the length on each side to allow for air flow if wanted but can be zipped up. The vents have no see'um netting. The foot end I cut a hole in and added some denim and gave it a draw cord. This allows for the bag to be slid over the hammock, or the draw cord can be closed to use the bag on the ground as as regular one instead. Each end has an understrap that keeps it centered on the hammock. These straps are adjustable so you dont have to woory about them being to tight or breaking. My bug net fits nicely around the bag and doesn't hinder getting in or out.

  • Okay wouldn't the bag be warmer if you just used it like a bag on top of the hammock and used a canvas around the entire hammock as an extra dead air space. It looks to me that you have just made a tube with an opening on both ends to loose heat....

  • @ferdonandebull the canvas defeats the purpose of using a hammock as in most ppl like me hammock for weight reduction. when using a sleeping bag you flatten the bottom part thus removing any warming value it had before that. by doing it this way you dont touch the walls of bag much or squash it. it does keep the system very much more warmer. this is just a cheap alternative to purchasing an underquilt & an overquilt both needed for cold winter camping. i did show that the ends draw close.

  • @FixedByDoc I don't mean to be pig headed. I am just getting into hammock camping. This will not close over your head. Do you have to carry another sleeping bag to actually sleep in? I have slept on the ground and never noticed the crush making my bag cold. Why wouldn't a bag that encloses everything and sags six inches below the hammock not make a dead airspace and do the job? I used "canvas" for anykind of material that will produce the effect. Not arguing just looking for illumination.thanks

  • @ferdonandebull you dont want any bag to close completely over face for many reasons. 1 it soaks bag with water vapor and freezes it. 2 carbondioxide build up can harm you. 3 this bag can close up completely if you wanted it to. i just didnt show it. i dont use canvas for hammocking because its heavey but i do use it for bushcraft camping. anything that creates dead air space will work... even better if it is wind proof too. this is just a cheap quick alternative that only cost me about $20.

  • @Fixedbydoc the sleep cell is a 40* sleeping bag not 0

  • @grahamcracker48 actually they come in multiple ratings and this one is rated at 0* F. It says so on the bag. also ive used it to -5* F and have been fine in this setup.

  • @SMS0224 it is the Sleep Cell and it is the 0* one... it works great and you have many options on hanging it too. just dont get it wet unless you use a better quality bag.

  • Fantastic idea. What is the model/brand of walmart sleeping bag you used for this project?

  • @petertjarnlund great id like to see it when you are done... post a video response if you can...
