Would you say that first shot damaged the gun? I'm tempted to take my dslr out with the 50mm to record gameplay footage but I'm thinking I really shouldn't.

Not really, I killed a $2 filter and a $99 lens whos inards had managed to eat themselves up and was no longer usable.
