Its rare to see El Guerrouj humbled in a major race and they do not come any bigger than the Olympic final.
Leading from the front as he did in this race was always brave but there was no one there to do the paceing for him.
He set the pace and ultimately was not in the best shape possible.
I believe both Coe and Ovett had trained for nearly eleven years for the Moscow Olympics where Ovett beat Coe over his favorite distance 800m but Coe won the 1500m title so all was equal.
