http://www.ted.com The world's population will grow to 9 billion over the next 50 years -- and only by raising the living standards of the poorest can we check population growth. This is the paradoxical answer that Hans Rosling unveils at TED@Cannes using colorful new data display technology (you'll see).

TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate. • I don't think you guys truly understand his real message. POVERTY AND HUNGER CAN BE ENDED IN OUR GENERATION BUT DEVELOPED COUNTRIES MUST BE THE FOUNDATION FOR THAT GREAT FUTURE. We have the technology and capability to lead a fantastic GREEN future. Population will grow, yes, but so will everyone's quality of life with schooling and medicine to prevent third world over-population. By the time I die I hope there has been great positive progress towards this. Imagine a world without poverty.

  • Rosling is an outright genious!

  • Human race is cancer

  • The west stopped helping developing worlds sincerely a long time ago. Now they are actively trying to slow their growth (since about 40 years ago)

  • Prior to Europe invasion the Americas had very low population u moron. Thats a fact of history.

  • Prior to the European invasion, The americas were heavily populated. The modern day united states had more people then than it does today. The issue isnt how many of us that ther are, it is how we live on the earth. Many human cultures have lived on the land while building up its fertility. These silly talking crackers just ruin everything while pointing the finger at other cultures.

  • @ashunga543 - True, so gloom and doomest people need not worry about more babies

    being born!!

  • @limoboss6242 That is true, but the rate at which it is growing, is declining. Meaning, population will eventually hit a pinicle climax and decline.

  • @ashunga543 - You are correct, the world is not over populated, the population is more

    each year as we grow!!

  • @toob247 The population went from 3 billion in 1960 to 6 billion in 2000, we just got to 7 billion, at a billion every 12 years or so, it will be 2075 before we hit 12 billion

which would be the doubling you are referring to, I don't see us getting there with abortion and birth control and constant bombardment of over population messages,

so don't worry, we are not screwed as you put it, you are letting the pop fanatics get

to you, let the pop grow, human nature to grow!!

  • if 3 billion 50 years ago , wow we're screwed if in just 50 more we double again.

  • @DeepThought42a Wouldn't you want your kids to live in a world like that?
