Officially, every day, more than 500 innocent dogs are euthanized (killed) in Puerto Rico. Unofficially, an untold number of others die of starvation, disease, abuse, or neglect. On an island the size of Connecticut, there are between 150,000 and 200,000 of these homeless dogs, called satos, or "street dogs." Left unchecked, this number will grow exponentially. In six years, one unsterilized female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies. Dead Dog Beach is just one of many places where these unwanted dogs are left to fend for themselves or die.
