We used little magnets and steel rod. We drilled a hole in each checker and glued in a small section of the steel, then put a magnet on the bottom of the robot's arm. To pick up a checker it just lowers the arm down, to drop it lifts the arm further up and presses the checker against a separate piece, essentially removing the magnet from the piece, allowing the piece to fall.
