By request.... The Saint Louis Blues played on my homemade Gramophone.
Recording is by Teddy Stauffer, 1936.

Because my camera has only a very tiny and terrible sounding mic, I picked up the sound with two condesor mices: one in front of the horn and a second in the lid of the gramophone - so I get more of the sound like you hear it in the room.

Afterthat I mixed it to mono, and "married" it with the video.
No manipulation of the original sound...

Here is the digital version:

  • How does this work? I'm trying to build a gramophone that will play vinyl without damaging it.

  • @TheHexeract Oh - Vinyl with a grammophone.... ;)

    1. You need a light late 1940´s or 50´s grammophone soundbox.

    2. Forget Steel needles - even soft one!

    3. You Bamboo or thorn needles

    4. Look for recording lathe motor - some can also play with 33rpm

    5. Built a big horn - vinyl played on a grammophone isn´t loud.

    6. GOOD LUCK ;)

    Looking forward to your attempt´s....

  • Any idea on how loud this setup will go in terms of dB SPL at 1 m or so? Without any kind of reference, this is very hard to judge from the video.

  • @yeoldeengineer In db I really dont know - and haven´t the technique to measure it.

    But it is loud... !

  • Well it has marvelous sound! You ought to market it!

  • @VictrolaJazz No way - you know, the € is going to collaps - but maybe with a horn of gold.... ;)

Seriously - this was a fun project. It took a lot of work - but this was also part of the fun.

How to ship such a beast... ?

  • i think this might be one of the biggest horns in the world!, the only bigger one i can think of is the nimbus mk3 horn but that sounds terrible with a echo but this sounds great, i might even say it is better than a emg

  • @formiggini i doubt i would find a copy in the uk, if you find another copy could you get it and i will but it from you or swap it

  • @kirtley2010 It´s a german Telefunken record, Teddy Stauffer had been very populär in the 30´s here, so you may find his records often.

The St. Louis Blues disc isn´t that uncommon - at least here in germany ;)

  • i really really like this version of st louis blues, have you any idea if it is rare or not?
