Time-lapse of Carey Beebe inserting the dampers in the front 8´ jacks of a French Double Harpsichord.

The repetitive task of inserting sixty-three dampers is ideal to show in time-lapse. What takes about twenty minutes in real life is compressed here to about a minute and a half.

The strip of damper cloth is inserted into the slot of the first jack. There must be sufficient clearance between the bottom of the cloth and the top of the quill so there is space for the string to be accommodated and the note repeat reliably. The cloth is pulled backwards through the slot, leaving its front projecting slightly beyond the length of the quill. The excess damper strip is sliced off at the back of the jack with a sharp knife. If necessary, the front of the damper is trimmed square. The jack can then be dropped into the register and the note played a few times to confirm correct operation, before moving on to the next jack.
