In defense of the ref, let me remind you that if you move your hands to protect your face ... it's clearly a hand ball. You are allowed to protect yourself on free kicks, but your hands must remain still and not move. This way the ball hits your hands rather than your hands hitting and moving into the path of the ball.

according to FIFA rules, "handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The ref must take into consideration: the movement ot the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand): the distance between the opponent ant the ball (unexpected ball): the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement" there is more. basicly it whether the player played the ball or the ball played the player.
