Using in your Wheel Chair
When not moving:
- ALWAYS remember to put on the brakes when you are stopped.
- To keep from falling out of the chair:
- You should NOT lean forward, past the armrests.
- You should NOT bend to reach low objects.
- You should NOT reach behind you over the top of the back rest.
Moving forward and backward:
- To move forward, unclamp the brakes, hold the hand rims attached to the rear wheels and push forward.

- To move backwards, unclamp the brakes, hold the hand rims attached to the rear wheels and pull back.
Moving Left and Right
- To turn right, hold the right hand rim steady and push forward the left hand rim.
- To turn left, hold the left hand rim steady and push forward the right hand rim.
- Always check there are no obstacles in your way when turning.
Obstacles:
- Many pavements and roads slope towards the curb, causing the wheelchair to roll to one side. You will need to steer the wheelchair in the opposite direction so you dont roll off the curb.
- Stay away from uneven and soft ground. Always use dropped curbs if you can.
- Be very careful on wet, icy or slippery flooring.
- DO NOT use a wheelchair on an escalator either alone or with an attendant.
- It is easier to go backwards into an elevator so that you do not have to turn around in a small space.
Remember that wheelchairs are quiet, so make sure others are aware of you!!!
