14 - Time Traveler Voyage With Columbus - Pages 9 & 10

You wake up on the deck of a ship. Your head is pounding. You have a big lump behind your ear, a present from Romano.

A boy about your age is bending over you. He's splashing water on your face from a bucket.

"Where am I?" you groan. "How did I get here?"

The boy grins. "We found you lying unconscious on the dock. Somebody said you belonged to our crew. So we carried you on board."

You sit up, holding your head. "Are we at sea?"

The boy nods. "Yes. We left Palos this morning. We're on our way to the Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa. Captain Columbus wants to stop there for last-minute supplies."

Your head is slowly clearing. "Thanks for taking care of me." you say.

"Forget it." The boy grins. "By the way, I'm Diego--deck helper here on the Pinta."

The Pinta! Oh no! You were supposed to sail on the Santa Maria!

"Ho, Diego! You're wanted aft!" someone shouts.

Diego hurries to the rear of the ship, leaving you alone. You look around you. Ahead to the left, or port side, of the Pinta, you see the Nina. On the right, or starboard side, you see the Santa Maria. Columbus is standing at the railing, holding a brass speaking tube.

"Ho, Pinta!" he shouts. "Move up! I want all ships to stay close together, in case we run into trouble!"

The flagship is so near, yet so far! You can't just pop up there, out of the blue. If you jumped now to the Santa Maria, the sailors might think you were a ghost!

What was it Diego said? The fleet is going to the Canary Islands for supplies. That means there will be men and boats coming and going. Maybe, in the confusion, you can appear on the flagship without anyone noticing.

Yes, that's your best bet. You're alone on deck. Now's your chance to jump ahead to the Canaries--and hope you won't run into your enemy, Romano!
