  • ah I forgot: the danse macabre's theme is used as a kind of junction between different old songs (for example the french nursery rhime "Ah! vous dirai-je maman" (mozart used it to write 12 variations on it))

    once again: old songs=fossils of music ;)

    well that is because saint-saens "stole" all pieces for the carnival from other sources (for example the turtels dance a realy slow version of the cancan); as for the fossils... well he took it from his own "danse macabre", because you see: fossils=dead animals=death=theme of the danse macabre
