Sparrows, being sociable little buggers, like to live in little communities and as such prefer roosting sites where they can remain in close proximity - hence the 'terrace' nest box as opposed to the single compartment favoured by other species. So, sociable and fussy too! Sheesh!

  • Great video

  • @TheToonToon100 Thanks! This year, the little buggers have decided to make their nest in the eves of the house behind the gutter a mere 5' away from their luxury apartments! Buggers indeed! :)

  • oh what lucky birds! love the lightening seeds and gotta go dust of my Mock Turtles, too.

is the metal plate around the entrance to attract them or just for us humans to admire? lovely lovely box.

  • Actually, the metal plate, whilst adding a certain aesthetic quality, is intended to stop predators (woodpeckers, squirrels etc) from gnawing at the entrance hole and gaining access to the precious contents! Mind you, I'm using 18mm birch ply, so it would take a fairly hefty, hungry and persistent squirrel to crack that nut open! :)

  • lol I always lose my pencil during projects, too. Great job on the bird box, and good for you providing nice housing for the birdies.

  • I've started putting the pencil behind my ear. D'you think that helps...? Nope!

  • @BradThunder No problem :) and thats a shame, at least they tried it out :)

  • That's a brilliant birdhouse! You could charge rent to the wee sparrows, it's so grand!

I'm jealous that you actually have a woodworking shed with loads of tools! *drools*

As for what Stoneygate Squirrel mentioned, yes, a nest box cam would be a great idea...

  • WOW - without doubt the classiest nest box I've ever seen! And with sparrow numbers in decline that's a great idea.

You can pick up nest box camera kits quite cheaply now, to film the chicks as they hatch and grow - that would make a great video project.

  • Wow, you're a real craftsman with this sort of thing. My projects are more akin to my editing, which is do it "barely adequate enough to get the job done" :)
