They are wired in series/parallel. 4 batteries in series gives 6 volts (4x1.5). A group of 4 is wired in parallel with the other 7 groups of 4 (8 total groups) (8x4=32) to provide more current capability (higher amp hours) at 6 volts. Basic electricity!!!
