No, none of those things are there. It is not deep, intellectual, edgy, or unconventional. I didn't choose "not to get it". Trust me, I wanted to like that film. I got it as a gift, and gave it about the best chance I've ever given a movie. And yet it's so monumentally flaccid and tawdry and simple minded it's difficult not to lose respect for everyone I hear praising it.
The movie is about a boy who through TIME-TRAVEL chooses to sacrifice himself to save the world. The whole movie is such a mindf*ck (in the best of ways) but i guess theres no point in feeding the troll.
The reason why you think it postures as being deep, intellectual, edgy and non-conventional, is becouse you feel like somethings missing. And all those things are there... You just either choose not to get it, doesn't bother to get it or are just plain stupid... You say it's about emo, teen angst.. Well:
There was NOTHING good about Donnie Darko beyond the cinematography and the actors. The story is a horribly written, sloppy, shallow, and embarrassing piece of shit. It postures as being deep, intellectual, edgy and non-conventional, yet it is precisely the opposite in each category. It appeals to people because kids relate themselves to being an angsty little whining ass and not knowing why they're so pissy, and it gives them a chance to pretend like they watch independent and thoughtful films.
this is by the same guy who does PDQ BACH there is another AUDIO version by a woman. on vinyl, anybody remember? I do and someone else in a used record store remembers also.
