Ephesus was a great Roman port on the west coast of Turkey. Famous for its huge stadium and library, I visited it in October 2006.

  • No, it was a Greek city with a Greek name, founded by Greeks, built by Greeks and later like all the Greek world was conquered by the Romans. After that, the city remained culturally and linguistically Greek, even though it was administered by Romans.

  • Not much left of it - apparently the local population used a lot of the marble to make lime. How many treasures were lost to that over the years...
