Serve and Volley is my favorite Tennis to watch. Right now, there's no great serve and volley player. It's a specialized skill that I think once it's done with incredible skill, it is very lethal against a baseliner. But since you don't see any right now, people think that a Serve and Volleyer can't make it today. Wrong, if and when someone comes along with a great serve and volley game, people will think different. Pete Sampras competed with Roger Federer and the match was close. Peace

its pretty amazing that you don't even see serve and volley at wimbledon even now I know the balls are heavier blah blah but that has to be the right tactic! I miss serve and Volley!

@ysdwdy If Federer had been teleported back to that era, he would've evolved as a serve and volleyer. A great player in any era would've adapted to any other era. Hard work and talent will always have the same return on investment.

serve n volley is how tennis is supposed to be played, the first courts were allll grass, and its not a coincidence that half of petes GS are on grass. Pete is the greatest player ever, he even said he he were to play nowadays he would still SnV cause thats the only way he knows how to play! :D

@SamCoreJ I think people can Serve and volley if they used it. But if you don't think so, than that's your opinion. I think they can. Technology or no technology. But I do agree you can't go in every time to Serve and volley. You have to be selective when you can Serve and Volley
-
Of course people have the ability. They just don't practice it very much because its not a good tactic. It is down to the technology like you said.
Players are better athletes now though, they all have personal trainers, traveling physiotherapists, nutritionists etc. But I don't see that working against the volleyers, its down to the technology.

@SamCoreJ Honestly, I think Serve and Volley can sicceed if you are good enough. You get a player off balance by hitting a good passing shot, and there's no way they can react to a person coming in on a volley to hit he volley off. I my opinion, athletes aren't necessarily better, just the rackets are more powerful.
The reason people don't think you can Serve and volley now is there's no one with that ability. Pete Sampras could do it. He was probably the last incredible S/V player R

The serve volleyer can't make it today. They just get picked off. The ball is passed them before they can react. Its a result of modern technology, better rackets, better string. The only surface I think players can still serve volley is grass. I don't see why there couldn't be another change in the future that brings the serve volley back, but right now its just a surprise tactic, not a smart game plan.

its is almost impossible to s & v with the technology of today's strings and racquets. its not that players don't want to its just way too hard to do. watch fed vs sampras at 2001 Wimbledon to see how much fed was doing it back then. until they change the strings or speed up the courts it will always be a base liners game no matter what every1 says....
I cannot help but think that, if Federer and Nadal were teleported back to the grass and fast indoor events of 1990s, they would have had a tough time against the big serve and volley players then. Sampras and Ivanisevic services on grass were practically unreturnable - which prompted the broadcasters and organizers to cry foul. There were plenty of baseliners with extreme grips then, and such combination was not thought to be a winning formula on fast courts.
