It was kind of funny seeing somebody calling qdragon just "q" when talking about Star Trek. :-) At least for those of us who watched all 5 of the series.

I think it's a combination of prediction and inspiration. The small portable communication device was just an extension of already existing radio communication systems. The datapad was just the logical extension of computers getting smaller. Things like teleportation were based on scientific theory (though added for budgetary reasons too).
However it also inspires. The Space Shuttle is famously named so because of the Trek Shuttlecraft.

Very interesting.
I think shows like Star Trek inspire, not predict, of course.
Being somewhat in the medical field myself, it starts with "Wouldn't it be great if....." it also starts with "Dammit, I wish there was a less time consuming way how to do this!!" I found this very interesting.
