By late afternoon that same day Katie needed an emergency thracheotomy at which I assisted. For about 15 minutes it was touch and go as she struggled for each breath and we searched in the incision for her trachea, finally inserting the sawed-off casing of a syringe to open an airway. I will never forget the sound of her first easy breath through the makeshift trach tube.

And yes, this sweet mare forgave me!

  • My horses are o now. Strangles frightens me as there apears to be no cure. I hope she survived

  • We had six horses with strangles, & all presented differently. Katie survived but it was a very near things. Some of them got just sore throats. Some needed their abscesses cut & drained for them. Most horses don't get this sick, as I understand it now. Her immune system was worth squat, having been raised and kept in overly sterile environments all her previous life.

  • we have strangles very close to our yard at present. Please get a vet out xxxx

  • Check the date ;-).

  • Thanks Emma. Not nice. Hope she comes good. We have injections here for that, to protect them. Equivac. Tetanus and Strangles. Love the Rooster. Merry Christmas

  • Yes, it really bothered me that this beautifully bred Arabian Blue Star Al Khamsa mare was not vaccinated! (She isn't mine). I was just adding to the video comment that we had to do an emergency tracheotomy on her before the day was out. She's pulled through but we very nearly lost her.

  • @horseproblems Every horse in our barn had been vaccinated prior to getting strangles. It went through the whole barn. We were quarantined for months.

  • A horse at my local riding stables has strangles and they think a few more have caught it so they had to block off the yard and the people that went in there have to shower as soon as they get home! They had it once before the yard was blocked off from may to august! And It night happen this time

  • aww poor mare =( our barn had a hugee breakout of strangles last winter, where almost half the barn got infected & we have about 50 horses on the property... IT SUCKED. one of our horses got so bad it had to go into the vet's facilities for a while and ended up needing surgery =/ anything that touched the sick horses was either dunked in bleach or burned and we had to wear these huge yellow jumpsuits that covered every inch of your body whenever we were dealing with those hroses, it was BAD
