After Wednesday's game, the Boston College High School hockey team spent a little more time than usual in its locker room at Boston College's Conte Forum.
Too bad it wasn't to admire the nice digs.
The Eagles were at the receiving end of some spirited words from their coaching staff following a 3-1 loss to Catholic Memorial in the Catholic Conference. Not even five minutes had elapsed in the game when BC High trailed 2-0, both on CM tapping in rebounds behind first-year starting goalie Sam Marotta.
``I don't think we played with a lot of urgency or intensity,'' said Eagles coach Joe McCabe, whose team's record dropped to 5-2-2 and 1-2-1 in the conference. ``I thought we picked it up in the second half of the first period, but we need to bring more heart and desire to the rink.''
BC followed up on a loose rebound of its own with 4:49 left in the first period to draw within one.
Brian Talbot, a junior center from Braintree, stripped a Knights defenseman at the blue line and walked in alone against sophomore goalie Tom Conlin. Talbot's bid was stopped, but his right wing, Sean Mahoney of Plymouth, followed up for the goal.
The Eagles finished the opening 15 minutes trailing in shots on goal by only one (9-8), but mustered only four in the second period to the Knights' eight. CM (8-0-1, 3-0-0) went on a power play with 7:18 left, but continued to dominate territorially after the man advantage as BC High struggled to find a rhythm. With 3:37 left, Derek Collucci converted on a 2-on-1 rush, keeping the puck and firing it past Marotta (20 saves).
Typifying the Eagles' night was a rebound opportunity soon after that goal that rang off the right post. BC managed only two shots on goal in the third period for a total of 14, while CM racked up seven and 23 for the game.
``I think we came out slow and missed some opportunities,'' BC High captain John Heffernan said. ``I think at practice we just have to keep working hard and things will start falling our way.''
Heffernan is one of four Patriot Ledger All-Scholastics who returned to BC High this year. Last season's goalie, Joe Cannata, who, like Heffernan, has committed to playing for Merrimack College next year, is currently playing with the U.S. Under-18 Team. Heffernan, of Scituate, is also among only eight regulars back from the two-time defending Division 1A Super Eight championship teams -- 14 players are in their first varsity season.
``Last year was last year,'' McCabe said. ``This is a new group and this is their year. And they need to play better.''
BC High's upcoming schedule is not forgiving to a team trying to find its footing. Xaverian, a team the Eagles beat earlier this season despite being outshot, is hosting on Saturday, then next up are Reading, Malden Catholic and St. John's Prep -- three other teams that are also in serious consideration for the Super Eight.
