I only found out he was a vegetarian about a week ago and now it seems like he's suddenly talking about it all the time! Have I just never noticed before?

Anyway, I understand his point of view - don't really agree with it, though. Cows probably wouldn't exist anymore if it weren't for us breeding them for food, they serve no other actual purpose, really. Not that I think it's nice to breed sentient creatures just to kill them, but not eating steak isn't going to change that, really.

@MrVinushka I don't think many vegetarians argue that we shouldn't eat beef so we can let cows live peacefully on pastures. Any educated veg would know that they're totally domesticated now and can't survive in the wild. The vegetarian argument has more to do with the politics/ethics behind meat production, especially in the United States and, to a lesser extent, Canada (I don't know how it is in the EU).

I think a lot of people would prefer cows to die out than continue suffering, though. That's the flaw in that argument for many vegetarians.
