In Cairo, he tells the story of the extraordinary physicist Ibn al-Haytham, who helped establish the modern science of optics and proved one of the most fundamental principles in physics - that light travels in straight lines.
Prof Al-Khalili argues that these scholars are among the first people to insist that all scientific theories are backed up by careful experimental observation, bringing a rigour to science that didn't really exist before.

Any halfway aware person knows that early Islam contributed worthy scientific advances and would not dispute the point. The problem is that Islam has been taken over by people who seem to ask "What would Muhammad do?" and come away with answers that do not grace humanity. Many Muslims today pretend that Islam is responsible for all scientific advancement.

@thevoiceofreason93..Eratosthe­nes, a Greek come up with the size of the earth in 240 B.C., and as for science and math, yes there was an explosion of knowledge in the mideast until Islam came along. I have read your Quran, It's no different than any other "holy book" written by ancient, ignornat, desert savages with no knowledge of how the world works. Nothing has ever been proven as fact in ANY "holy books" It ALL has to taken on "faith", and "faith" is gullibility period.

That applies only to modern day extremists, i'm afraid, extremists who are complete pricks who oppose all good Enlightenment values, do things that are against even the Koran and the word of God, and hate science. (This hatred however, was caused the long reign of conflicts between west and Islam started by the Crusades). Treating Women like animals is mostly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, which only represent 10% of the Muslim population. Also, violent against women in Arabia is 25%, LESS than the united States (30%). Anyways, 60% of the Muslim population is in Asia!

MEMRI TV has among its YouTube videos one called "Muslim Scientist: Neil Armstrong Proved Mecca - World Center."

First, Armstrong is a Muslim only in the sense that Muslims say we ALL are. But the video is three minutes of the stuff that separates the gullible from the thoughtful because, throughout, a Dr. 'Abd Al-Baset Sayyid (an Egyptian) presents a jaw-dropping wish list of idiocies that he seems to accept as genuine science. It's a must-see for all who doubt Muslim credulity.
