LOL = Laugh Out Loudly?
I thought it was "Laughing Out Loud" or "Laugh Out Loud" or something describing the sender/typer actions.

It appears that he may have been laughing so hard that he could not keep sufficient pressure on the shift key to indicate consistent exclamation. And while this theory seemed plausible to me as I typed it, I now find myself at a loss to explain why HOLLAAAAAAAAA, OMG, LOL and WTF, contain no lowercase letters. This obviously requires more thought....
