WXYZ-TV Detroit featured the Detroit Workforce Development Department Hospitality/Retail Career Center in partnership with Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit in this Financial Survival Guide segment March 18, 2009. The program is one of many offered by Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit to help fight local unemployment. Weekly orientation sessions (Thursdays 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Fridays 1 to 4 p.m., excluding holidays) offer dislocated or low-income Detroiters all the information they need to get started in the program designed to provide the skills and guidance necessary to secure employment in numerous retail and hospitality careers with upward mobility. Orientation sessions take place at Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit (3111 Grand River, Detroit). Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit provides people facing barriers to employment with opportunities to become independent, self-supporting citizens through training, work experience and employment in the community. In the past two years of the organizations nearly 90-year history, Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit has placed more than 2,500 Wayne, Oakland and Macomb county individuals into new jobs and provided education, training and career assistance to thousands more in the region through a variety of programs, including the Hospitality/Retail Career Center with help from partner organizations like the Detroit Workforce Development Department.
Orientation sessions highlight various benefits of the seven-week program, which include customized education/career training with options that include 180 hours of skill-based classroom instruction, advanced job readiness training and work experience in a chosen career specialty. Program participants receive a nationally recognized certification in hospitality or certificate of completion in retail and gain access to job placement and comprehensive career counseling services.
Graduates of the Hospitality Training program receive certification from the American Hotel and Lodging Association. The curriculum is developed by the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute. Courses are taught in partnership with Wayne County Community College District.
Since the Hospitality/Retail Career Center opened in 2007, hundreds of graduates have successfully become trained, trusted and ready to work, securing career opportunities in many occupations. Graduates of the program have successful trained for a variety of career positions in the Detroit area, including:
- store manager
- guest services representative
- front desk clerk
- pharmacy technician
- maintenance worker
- restaurant server
- photo technician
- reservation agent
- laundry worker
- many others
