Thanks to DTaeKim for advice. As far as I know, he was the first person to get this score, though his strategy was different (and mine winds up being a day faster as well).

The basic strategy is to advance three loaded APCs, keeping them out of range of Grit's rocket so it just keeps moving forward and can't do anything. The rest is a couple of recons and a lot of infantry for Technique purposes.

A full-HP infantry starts capturing the HQ on day 6. Grit will attack it with the two recons, but it will survive. More to the point, the recons will stay put, effectively blocking Grit's tank and Mid Tank from attacking from those spaces and keeping those bases plugged up.

If you have something in range of the artillery on the north base, it won't move either. As a result, Grit blocks three of his own bases, and you can block the fourth with an infantry.

After looking over notes on the AW1 damage formula, it seems I was much luckier than I thought to be left with 5 HP after the recon attacks. The base percentages are 26 for the first attack, then 30 for the second if the infantry has 8 HP. That means if Grit gets more than three points of luck, the infantry only has 4 HP.

Interestingly, on Day 7 the Mid Tank was very stubborn about not attacking. I had to try a lot of times to get favorable movement and damage, but every time, even if the tank and healthy artillery took out the blocking infantry and exposed the HQ infantry, the Mid Tank stayed put.

In retrospect, it might have been better to build a recon on Day 4; I can't build enough units in 8 days to be able to afford three losses, so leaving an open base on that turn doesn't really affect anything.

Originally, DTK managed to do this in 9 days with the infantry being taken down to 4 HP each day. I couldn't figure out how to do the map that way, so I opted to wait for favorable damage instead.

  • I´ve been having my as kicked on this map at Advance Wars Dual Strike. The same strategy can be applied on Dual Strike?

    i would always get frustrated with my constant C rating on this map using a traditional consolidate and chokepoint fight strategy.

    didn't think about an infantry rush. Job well done exploiting the AI stupidity.
