Dirty Little Secret - Part 4 - A Nick Jonas One Shot for Nvbrox16 Contest Round 1

"Who has to know?"

I can't tell you exactly how many rounds of that game we played but it was a ton. Frankie eventually fell asleep on my lap, so Joe and I talked until I saw Nick and his parents heading our direction. My eyes lit up. Joe noticed, turned around, saw his brother, jumped up, and wrestled him in a hug. Mr. Jonas managed to pry Joe off of Nick and they came and sat down. Nick took a seat behind me and put his face in his hands. I didn't bother asking him what was wrong. I just placed my right hand on his back and soothingly rubbed it. I rested my head on his left knee and continued rubbing his back.
I dozed off after a few minutes, but I caught the general idea of what had happened. The doctor had taken some blood for testing and now we were waiting for the results. I don't know how long I was asleep but it wasn't too long. I felt Nick's knee move and my head dropped suddenly which startled me awake. I looked up, but Nick had left his seat. When I turned my head I saw the entire Jonas family disappear back through the double doors. I sighed and climbed up into Nick's chair. My mom scooted over to sit beside me and I rested my head on her right shoulder. I kept my eyes open and watched the clock until the double doors opened again and the Jonas family emerged.
Mr. Jonas had his arm around his wife and was holding her close. Tears flowed down her cheeks and she had her head rested on her husband's shoulder as they walked towards us. My mom stood up and ran towards Mrs. Jonas embracing her in a hug. Joe and Frankie followed close behind, but where were Kevin and Nick? I watched the double doors, waiting for my best friend to walk through them but he didn't. Joe and Frankie came over to me and Frankie climbed into my lap. He wrapped his arms around me and buried his face in my neck. I wrapped my arms around him and patted his back soothingly. I looked up at Joe with a "what happened" look. Joe sighed.
"Maya, Nick has diabetes." Joe collapsed into the chair to my left and let his head fall onto my shoulder. I sat there and rubbed Frankie's back. My best friend has diabetes? Tears slowly began to escape my eyes. I sat there for a few minutes until I felt the gentle, even pace of Frankie's breathing. I held onto him tightly as I stood up and placed him back in my empty chair. I walked over to where Mr. and Mrs. Jonas sat talking to my mom. I cleared my throat and they all looked up at me.
"Can I go see Nick?" I asked quietly. Tears still flowed down my cheeks. Mr. Jonas stood up and gave me a hug. He pulled away after a few seconds and looked into my eyes.
"Of course you can Maya." Mr. Jonas put his arm around my shoulder and led me through the double doors. We walked in silence down a long hallway, we rounded a few corners and stopped in front of a room with a window. The blinds were closed so I couldn't see in, but I knew my best friend was lying in a bed in a dark room on the other side. Mr. Jonas turned the doorknob and opened the door. He stuck his head inside.
"Nick, you have a visitor." Mr. Jonas turned back to me and nodded I walked passed him into the room and he closed the door behind me.
The only light in the room came from above Nick's bed. I walked slowly towards him. Kevin sat in a chair on the left side of his bed and there was another chair on the right. I walked over to it and sat down. Tears still streamed out of my eyes as I looked up at Nick. He was in a hospital gown and he was hooked to an IV. I looked at his face, there were dark circles around his eyes. It broke my heart to see Nick like this.
"Nick, I'm so sorry." More tears came down my cheeks and I buried my face in my hands, trying to hide them.
"Kevin, can you give us a minute?" Nick spoke softly.
"Sure bro." Kevin climbed out of his seat and walked around the bed to me. He rested his hand on my shoulder and whispered in my ear. "I'll be right back Maya." A few seconds later there was a click and the door opened then other click and the door shut behind Kevin.
"Maya, can you look at me?" I lifted my face out of my hands and wiped away my tears. Nick reached over with his right hand and rubbed my left arm. "Maya, why are you sorry?" I wiped my eyes as a few more tears escaped.
"Because," I said softly." I broke our promise." Nick chuckled lightly.
"And I'm glad you did." I cocked my eyebrows and looked at Nick. He smiled. "Maya, you and Joe saved my life. The doctor said things would be a whole lot worse if I had been brought in any later." I smiled and playful patted Nick's right hand. "Maya," he said quietly and I looked up into his eyes. "Next time I ask you to keep a promise like that slap me." I laughed lightly.
"Will do," I smiled.
"Promise?" Nick cocked his eyebrow and I smiled wider. I nodded as I giggled more. "Super secret swear?" I laughed again.
"Super secret swear." I smiled as Nick and I did our "secret" handshake.
