In all that, it was a fitting analogy for how Chinas Communist Party leaders wanted their citizens and the world to regard them — and, perhaps, how they may be feeling themselves these days. The last such parade, in 1999, was of interest mainly to foreign military analysts and China hands. This time, the worlds media reported raptly on the significance of every detail, and Chinas state-run television network streamed video coverage over the Internet, in English and other languages, to viewers worldwide.

Mr. Hus drive-by review of his troops while standing in the open sunroof of a Chinese-made limousine echoed the identical reviews his predecessors conducted in decades past. Television images showed Mr. Hu waving stiffly and calling out Greetings, comrades! through four large microphones attached to the automobiles roof. Following tradition, the troops replied in unison, Serve the people!

The massive display of military power — according to the state-run Xinhua news agency, 52 weapons systems; 151 warplane flyovers; 12 intercontinental-range missiles; and new a missile, the Dongfeng 21-C, that one day could be used to counter American aircraft carriers — received by far the most attention. While Chinas military remains well behind that of many developed nations in sophistication and firepower, analysts said, its progress since the last such parade in 1999 was impressive.

  • Why would i hate china? i hate america... sheesh... just because america doesnt like you, dont mean United Kingdom does.

  • @dsindc @HongHaidao Finally, what I'm trying to point out is that no system is perfect, no race is superior, and no country is without error. Young people at least in the U.S., Canada, and much of the West are feeling less citizens of their own country, and more citizens of the planet. The old ways led to disaster after disaster. My hope is that we can all move past that. It's great to see a beautiful prosperous China. I hope to see it with my own eyes.

  • china got that way becasue of her willingness to have no moral code for her laborers. she forces everyoner to work while she controls the pouulation by opium and other such activities. she is one of the worst human rights violators next to the us. her piracy and black market activites are worse than you can imagine, she has no regard for her poor, it is a dictatorship. she has no regard for patent laws either. so if you like those policies i suggest you get a passport and leave america.
