Nicola Corbin, 1st year doctoral student at University of Georgia, presents "On Their Home Court:
Social Media and Political Attitudes in College Students." Through an online survey method, this study of the uses and gratifications of social media explores what needs are satisfied when college students use online social media for political information. A factor analysis resulted in three motivations: guidance, information seeking/surveillance and social utility/entertainment. Guidance emerged as the most heavily loaded factor for using social media for political information. Although there were no significant correlations between these three factors and the political attitudes measured, the study revealed some relationships among political information efficacy, political activities and political cynicism. Her research was conducted as a part of Dr. Kaye Sweetser's fall 2009 JRMC 8010 graduate Research Methods class at UGA's Grady College. Her final research report is at http://podcasting.gcsu.edu/4DCGI/Podcasting/UGA/Episodes/18691/13327.pdf
