Originally composed in 1900, as a piece for Cello and Piano, this piece came to fruition as a completed work in 1921 after being expanded to a Concert piece for Cello and Orchestra.
What a shame that Respighi did not carry on upon the themes he built here in order to create his own Cello Concerto. Alas, he did not, and we have only this to represent his giftings with the instrument, but what a glorious display of his talent for composing for Cello.
Performing are The Philharmonia (London) with Geoffrey Simon at the helm and Alexander Baillie on Cello.
Enjoy!
3 months ago I personally witnessed at the home of an old and quite famous ex-cello teacher in Italy the manuscript of the solo cello part of a cello concerto written by Respighi in (if I remember well) 1903. I've been told that the orchestra part has been lost since then. Besides, the second movement was actually the Adagio con Variazioni, with only slight differences in the cello part. What a shame we can't hear the whole thing...

Does any one know where I can find the cello & piano version?

Very powerful, Respighi is one of the masters who can easily transcribe pure and raw emotions on a large ansamble, plus Baillie did a great job too !
Thx for posting !
