If you haven't got a garden or allotment you can grow potatoes in bags on patios and balconies instead. In this video I experiment to see how easy to use potato bags are.

  • I have 6 bags of potatoes happily growing - thanks to your tutorial. My question is: the plants are growing at different rates in the same bag - do I wait for the smallest one to be large enough to add more compost or just bury it when I add compost to the height of the tallest one? Thanks for the great video!

  • @erinlaver You should be okay to bury smaller shoots when the larger ones are ready. As long as the smaller ones are growing, they should be fine.

  • @jonathanwallace nice video put can u use the soil again after u haverst the potatos

  • @kokosam1959 Yes, you can reuse the soil. We put it onto one of the beds on our allotment. A couple of times previously we have put the soil/compost back into the bag and used it to grow radishes.

  • did you chit your potatoes before planting them? If so, how long do you leave them before planting

  • @stanleywf3 Yes, we always chit them. Length of time varies, typically a month however

  • Potatoes from the supermarket will cost a fraction of the cost of buying seeds, bags compost and fertilizer

  • great idea.. we tried doing this with wood frames and didn't have much luck but looks like you have a good system

  • Great Video, I have done this in used tires as the plants grow just keep adding tires. Can reach 4 ft easily. Use straw and bedding mix to fill tires. I grew up on a Idaho Spud farm, I spent my youth digging corragates to water the plants.

Hint spuds stop growing in size when the soil around them dries, to have larger spuds, keep the soil damp don't worry much about the green stuff, keep the soil damp. If you let the soil dry then water again it causes knobs on spuds as spud thinks time to grow

  • @jonathanwallace thanks 4 that u girl she so happy take care family the best think

  • Very cool!

  • She is so positive.

    Heidi.

  • do u use the potatoes from the grocery store?
