I actually just discovered this tune a few weeks ago...my bro showed me a video here on Youtube of Elton John performing this song at his 60th birthday concert...and was thoroughly impressed by the performance. I quickly proceeded to learn the tune.
It's from his 1972 record Honky Chateau.

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters

And now i know...
Spanish harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought i knew...
But now i know that rose trees never grow in new york city

Until you've seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And i thank the lord there's people out there like you
I thank the lord there's people out there like you

While mona lisas and mad hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around to say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light

This broadway's got...
It's got a lot of songs to sing
If i knew the tunes i might join in
I'll go my way alone...
Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown in new york city

Subway's no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And i thank the lord for the people i have found
I thank the lord for the people i have found

While mona lisas and mad hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around to say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light
They know not if it's dark outside or light....

  • Very impressive Eddie. I've been an Elton John Junkie since the beginning of his career. I never get enough of his music. Your voice with the guitar instead of piano was a perfect blend. I'd like to know if you have a Facebook page so I can follow you an your music.. I know its 3 years since you posted this.I'm kinda new to youtube. I hope you see these comments.

  • jeez man, that's great. you really got the feel. and I needed a shot of the chords you're using to get me through the transitions.. I thought I was the only amateur out there playing this... great.. put up more.

  • This sounds so good :) I love this song, you do a brilliant job. I have saved this redention. Your guitar technique is spot on and your vocal is realy good also. You have a lot of talent, man. Make some money!!!!!!!

  • well my friend, this is the video that really got me to take the leap into uploading stuff to youtube. as you said you had recently discovered this Elton classic, I invite you to come and check out a couple other obscure Elton tunes, which I've uploaded, that you may not be familiar with - "High Flying Bird" from his "Don't Shoot Me..." album, and "Holiday Inn" from the "Madman..." album. Well, check out Elton's versions too, for sure! actually I suggest HIS first....

  • great job on a difficult song to sing...Thanks!
