Ya Santiago de Cuba es todo color y calor humano; la XXVII Edición del Festival del Caribe reune aquí a mas de mil artistas e intelectuales llegados de 22 países.
Entre las delegaciones más numerosas están las de República Dominicana, a cuya cultura se dedica por segunda vez la fiesta; México, Argentina y Curazao.
Organizadores y especialistas coinciden en que esta edición de la también conocida como Fiesta del Fuego será la mayor en la historia, por la alta concurrencia de creadores foráneos y locales, la variedad de talleres, encuentros teóricos, musicales y danzarios.
Con una gala artística en el Teatro Heredia quedó inaugurado la tarde de este 3 de julio del 2007 aquí y en Guantánamo, el también conocido como Festival Cultural de Origen Caribeño.
En la apertura se rindió homenaje a la memoria y la obra del destacado intelectual Joel James Figarola, creador de la Casa del Caribe, progenitora y principal auspiciadora de este evento, único de su tipo en Cuba y Latinoamérica.
Todo un espectáculo de primera regaló a los presentes, bailes tradicionales de grupos portadores de la cultura popular, entre ellos el virtuosismo del ballet Santiago, de la Compañía Teatro de la Danza del Caribe, El Cafetal, del Folklórico de Oriente, Ngwó, de Ciego de Ávila, y las agrupaciones danzarias Old Star y Fuego caribeño de aquí.
Orlando Vergés, director de la Casa del Caribe, pronunció el discurso principal de la tarde y señaló que la cultura popular en el Caribe sobrevivirá si continúa siendo leal a sus orígenes.
En este contexto se hizo entrega Post Morten del Premio Internacional Casa del Caribe, a Joel James Figarola, fundador y director de la Institución, cuyos estudios le hicieron merecedor del Premio Nacional de Cultura Comunitaria y del Premio Nacional de Investigaciones Sociales, distinción que recibió su nieto Joel Remón James, de manos del miembro del Buró Político del Comité Central del Partido, Misael Enamorado Dáger, su Primer Secretario en la provincia.
El teatro Heredia, principal centro cultural de Santiago de Cuba, será la sede central de la fiesta, que se extenderá a una treintena de salas, parques, instituciones y otros escenarios en los barrios.
