I'm singing! Shocking isn't it?

This is an old choir song I've had stuck in my piano music for a few years. It's titled "The Violet"; the words are by Jane Talor, and it was arranged by Mark Patterson.

I've wanted to put a song for voice up here on Youtube since I got my account long ago, but I couldn't find a song I could play and sing at the same time, I couldn't find something right in my range that would go well with my voice, etc. It took me a while to realize I could play this song (and sing at the same time!) and that it fit my voice perfectly already. ;)

This was written as a three part, SSA, (soprano 1, soprano 2, alto), choir song. I have no harmony, as you will quickly realize, but I'm a soprano, so I sing the melody anyway.

Also, my camera stinks at recording sound. Especially if you've got two sounds going at once. I tried to sing loud enough, but it may have thrown my pitch slightly off and so there are a few places where my voice ... er, fumbles a little. One high note near the end was just...not quite all there. (I also wasn't paying enough attention to my breathing and tone since I was playing the piano.) So it was a little difficult, and I was very very nervous recording, but I think it turned out pretty well.

Enjoy!

(I can't give out sheet music for this, sorry.)

Lyrics:
Down in the green and shady bed, a modest violet grew. Its stalk was bent, it hung its head, as if to hide from view. As if to hide from view.

And yet, it was a lovely flower, its colors bright and fair. It might have graced a rosy bowr instead of hiding there. Instead of hiding there.

Yet there it was, content to bloom in modest tints arrayed. And there it spread its sweet perfume, within the silent shade. Within the silent shade. The silent shade.

Then let me to the valley go, this pretty flower to see. That I may also learn to grow in sweet humility. In sweet humility. That I may also learn to grow, in sweet humility.

  • We may sing this song in my choir. Or "In time of silver rain"

  • I love "In Time Of Silver Rain." My choir's done it several times. Sadly, I never copied the sheet music at home, so I can't do it for Youtube. I guess it wouldn't sound quite as good without the other parts though. At least The Violet sounds all right with only the melody. (Right? lol)

  • That was nice, you should try to make a video of you singing. You know, just your voice, no piano, nothing but you, so we can appreciate your talent as a singer as much as your talent as a pianist.

I'm looking foward to that...if you're willing of course.

  • I'll think about that.:) I have a (Christmas) song in mind. Thanks for the suggestion, and for watching!

  • That was beautiful Laura.

  • Hey! A friend! lol Thanks for watching.:)

  • Region 18 choir sang this for our concert.

  • Your really good! I'm working on this piece for a solo...one thing my vocal teacher suggested was not scoop or slide.

  • Your piano skills are amazing! As for singing, breathe from your diaphram which will supply you with more air supply! And on the high notes sing from your head voice and focus the energy in between your eyebrows! You are really talented! Keep on singing! :)
