No, its really a detonation. The definition of "detonation" that you used is utterly ridiculous.
Detonation actually describes the rate of expansion/propagation. Generally speaking, its a detonation if the rate is faster than the speed of sound- a conflagration if it's less.
Actually, these are most definitely detonations. Firing a PDE into the open air does causes a lot of noise and vibration. We have lots of shakey movies, but in this case the camera was protected to give a steady image.
- which is why we run our's inside hardened test cells with superthick reinforced concrete walls.
@acerkiwi ... you could use a magnetic field like a flywheel... to smooth out the acceleration.

@acerkiwi ... i'd imagine so, go to school, then you can be the one to do that... i think you just invented "impulse engines" LOL no joke.

@arbighookasian Then you suck as mechanic to be honest.

@arbighookasian man you got no idea what you are talking about lol. Better to keep your mouth =X if you dont know much. FYI this is detonation.

If you are getting a high degree of ionisation, why cant you incorperate magnetic feilds to accelerate the gas?

Isn't the "air spike" the final goal?
