@Appaloosapinto Yeah, tell whoever is saying that to you to get lost! What a joke, it doesnt aid jumping at all, if anything standing martingales are dreadful things which should be banned in my opinion. You should never let anyone MAKE you use an item of tack you know your horse doesn't need :) I've never used a martingale on any of my horses (and I showjump and event), all it does is make them fight more if they're that way inclined.

I dont really see the problem here. Yes, the rider could be further over a bit but to be honest, the road is hardly busy so she's probably expecting drivers to move over a bit (rightly so!). I wouldnt drive past a cyclist really close just like I wouldnt a horse. And yes, I ride before you question me and have done for years. The only thing I vaguely agree with you on is the use of martingales (or "tie downs" whatever you call them) - I dislike their action also.

tiedowns arent used on spooked horses, most of the times they are, but there also used for those high headed horses so they wont be lifting their heads up for no logical reason and not knowing where they are going because their heads are so high they wont be able to see anything. barrel racers use them, tiedown ropers use em'. and they have to turn their heads around the barrels and tiedown ropers have to use them so their head wont be at their face.

A tie down? Is that the same as a martingale? They make me use that for shows because it "perfects the jumping form of the neck". Yea right, my horse is fine without it.

Thanks for sharing this video...I board my 2 horses at a western facility where barrel racing is the game of all games! I do not barrel race or any other sport where harsh restriction is used on a horse..I stopped going to stables during busy hours,I can't bare to watch these people with their spurs, tomb thumb bits, tie downs..It breaks my heart to see these horses that have turned angry with ears pinned back and teeth showing while in their stalls..I work daily with my horses on the ground-trust
So your answer is to keep driving past them while distracted with your video camera. Nice.....

I'd certainly prefer the not-the-road area she has to choose from there. I always thought martingales were the sign that you and the horse need more round pen work, and that a running martingale would be more useful than a standing one in that round pen situation anyway. (I assume that's what a tie-down is?) My parents hardly wanted me to leave the freakin' pasture. This here is the other extreme of that.

@cyberg00se : a tie down is a leather or rope strap tied straight from the horses head and then attacked to the girth cinch between the front legs, it prevents the head from going up is what the uneducated think. What it does is teaches a horse to pull, brace, fight and fear is inability to move his head so he can use his eyes like horses do to see things. It also will drown a horse if it gets in water since a horse can't swim if it cannot raise it's head. Barrel racers love them =no horsemanship

Usually when I ride on the street, I have somewhere I'm going to.
And actually most of the time I don't take the main roads, I stick to the back roads and what not so the speed limit itsn't very fast.
My horse is 5, and people have come up behind her on the road and honked, and she doesn't flinch at ALL. I've worked with that kind of stuff since she was young. But should I not ride on the road anymore? Is it not bad?
And what about riding in neighborhoods is it better there?
Thanks.

@westy4ever99 : would not say never or bad, just more risky and things happen so I like to have more error room, increase my distance, leave some space for reaction time and put my horse in a position to get killed, if I can help it. Some time you have to and it is good to work on these things, but you need to be very focused and attentive and know that you are taking a risk and is it worth it, if it goes bad.
