Video shot for use in the tiny fake monitors seen in my 1989 CNN Headline News open. I found the source tape today (processed to appear in an 1980s style Sony monitor); the in-control-room and newsroom stuff was expertly shot by TBS's Rafael Ortiz-Guzman and (I believe) Steve Shepard, and I chopped it together to the 1989 Headlines closing theme.

  • Hmmm, what can I identify in this video...

Grass Valley 1600 (from CU shot, a edit room?)

    Grass Valley 300 (larger switcher)

    Chyron Scribe

    Harris Iris

DEC VT220 (A Basys newsroom system I assume)

Old School prompter (just like the one I used to use) :)

And of course, JC Burns great graphics!

  • I'll toss in: A room full of Betacam SP playback decks, Utah Scientific router (the blinking red letters/numbers) and most amazingly, a menu from that awful Aurora Liberty paint system that drove me up the wall. (Most of the paint on the 89 package was done on the Quantel paintbox at WXIA...composited in..uh..composite on a Abekas A62.)

  • This is a great promotional video. Great photography and operation, Rafael Ortiz-Guzman and Steve shepard at the time were the topo dogs of TBS,

  • Do you have any more of the theme music? its great.

    Esp from the late 80s.

  • The switcher is not a 300 but a GVG 1600-7K with external E-Mem. Abekas A-53D Digital Effects. The switcher was donated to WPBA after retired from service in the late 1990's. I believe at that time it was replaced with a GVG-3000 composite digital switcher. I know the studio cameras at that time were RCA TK-47's. They were used at the old Techwood building. They captured many wrestling matches until replaced by Ikegami HK-357A's when CNN2 was launched in 1982. Enough history for now

  • I was wondering if those were the Auroras.

I never have used a Aurora paint system, but I'm aware of the history. I did see the systems in use on a CNN tour back around 1999-2000.

I can't tell from your video, but I believe the studio cameras back then, or perhaps a bit earlier were RCA TK-47's.

  • Thanks a lot JC, I loved your Headline News graphics together with the Score Productions Music.

  • Nice. I like the old HN graphic package
