Actually, I found that the right usage of either peg dope or sandpaper (to get the pegs working correctly) has made my mass produced lute quite playable. Although I'll fully admit that if I wasn't DIY enough to get it working myself, I probably would have given up on account of the pegs popping out of tune all the time.

A baroque lute will cost between $2500 and $10,000.

@kidneykutter You can also find cheaply made renaissance Lutes for around $500. Obviously, they don't compare in quality, but it is a good way to start if you are not sure if you want to invest long term.

Unfortunately the $500 mass produced lutes are unplayable out of the box and require several 100 dollars in work to make them useful enough to decide if you want to keep playing, at which point you need a better lute anyway.
