Droughts are one of the world's most devastating natural hazards. They have a major impact on the environment, health and the economy. In Canada, six of the top 10 costliest disasters have been droughts. And the 2001-2002 drought is considered to be Canada's worst natural disaster to date - 41,000 jobs were lost, and it cost nearly 6 billion dollars in damages.
