Late one night, I had a chance to talk with the conductors, who were taking their breaks in the dining car.

Some fun Amtrak facts:

Each car weighs 250,000 lbs per car unloaded.
That means 4 cars is a million pounds.
The double decker cars are nearly 20 feet tall.
The top speed we were going was 79 mph.
3 engines pulled a whole assortment of sleeper cars, first class, standard commuter cars, a diner car, an observation car, and a convenience store. Employees live their lives on one line, passing back and forth between two cities. They have separate cars for the employees to live in. This was like a city on wheels. As a matter of fact, the working population of the train was larger than many mid-western towns they passed through.
All of these things are delicately balanced on two tiny rails, which are continuously driven over, again and again by millions of tons of steel, every single day.

  • yes it goes in tank. Does the same thing on plane. Looks like fun.

  • ew. but i'm glad it doesn't go everywhere.

  • Thanks for sharing this. I always wanted to travel that way. Sounds loud and vibrational though. How was the temp control? The trip looked pretty gray and sunless. Do they allow you to bring a cooler full of supplies(Food, drink, beer)?

  • yes! they don't care if you bring your own alcohol, as long as you don't get plastered on the train. food is recommended.

  • Thats really cool, My wife and I love Amtrak, By the way the sewage is like a RV it just goes into tanks below.

  • I aint crazy about planes, so if I am traveling far I take the train, nice ride!

  • pretty cool facts about amtrack trains (discription) and getting chance to talk to entineer and conducters,

about the toilet, these days they are waste tank collected, these are drained and cleaned out while train car is at an amtrak depot and usually during food replenishment and general cleaning.

really glad they got rid of that crack addict passenger who was being weird, NOBODY needs people like that. i too, NEVER been on ANY train, accept amusement park loop rides.
