uh what are you talking about? they were doing a parody of western films... you know OLD Western Films??? they weren't old then, they were new and everyone loved them!
what do they make fun of on SNL?? STUFF THAT PEOPLE LIKE
I did this skit in the fourth grade with 3 of my classmates after I watched it on an Elvis biography. I've been an Elvis fan since I was 7, so naturally I played Elvis' part, even though I'm a girl. Girls can be Elvis too, if they want. I copied down all four parts and my classmates and I practiced it a couple of times and then performed it in front of our fourth grade class and a few teachers. That's a fun memory. I wonder if my classmates remember doing that. It was cute. :-)
nktrygg, you have no idea what you're talking about. For one thing, the theme of this sketch is Western, not Southern. Westerns were one of the biggest genres on TV at the time, like Reality or Forensic shows now. Spoofs of TV genres have always been fodder for comedy sketches.
To that point and krrruptidsoless' comment, Let's see if Jay Leno's "Jersey Shore" and Jaywalking bits are funnier in 2054 than this is today. I wasn't born then either, but I can always get a laugh out of Imogene Coca!
one of the most horrifying moments of Elvis' career - the whole idea to make fun of him for being southern should have canceled the appearance - but Parker was so determined to shift Elvis into being a mainstream entertainer. No wonder he took drugs to help him forget the humiliation and deal with the never ending prejudice he experienced - and no wonder he never bothered to fight for himself, when he was so conditioned to expect to be second class -

Does anyone realize that the fiddle player (Rattlesnake Griffith) is Andy Griffith before he was famous.
