Philly native Rel Dowdell discusses his feature film, TRAIN RIDE (2005) starring Wood Harris and MC Lyte and his journey as an African-American filmmaker. A REELBLACK EXCLUSIVE.
Train Ride is a multi-racial stimulating film. I believe this subject is over due for exposure to society. Mr. Dowdell's view of this topic will educate while entertaining all cultures. The film covered every emotion and captivated my attention from beginning to end. I am anxiously awaiting more enlightening works from REL DOWDELL.
Train Ride shines a bright light onto the issue of alcohol related rape that happens on an all to frequent basis. Mr. Dowdell is able to take such a sensitive issue and use the film to show viewers the other side of the issue. A very impressive first film from a black director for all races to experience.
I was very pleasantly surprised after getting "Train Ride" and checking it out. It moves just like a train, it starts out of the gate and you don't really know what path it's going to take. All of a sudden, it builds steam and becomes tremendous until it reaches it unexpected destination. Definitely worth watching and talking about it with friends long after seeing it. Loved the music as well. It covered many different genres, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, everything.
Really enjoyed this interview. By first glance, the director looks like a really young guy, but after hearing his composed and highly articulate speech, I could tell he has a good and lengthy educational; background. Went out and got the film from the store FYE right after hearing it. The director was right, the film definitely could save a life, esp. a female. Thought the part about Lisa Lopes being cast early in the film's process and then replaced was interesting as well.
Great interview! Great movie!
